Beyond Cozy Nook
Builder’s Yard & Market Garden
Beyond Cosy Nook was the back land that was the builder’s yard and the market garden. This was eventually developed and became Cottingham Way and is a light industrial estate.
Wimpey’s
To the East of this land is an area which, during the War, was leased to Wimpey’s who had their depot there whilst they were involved in airfield construction which was extremely extensive in this area.
Highways Department
When Wimpey’s pulled out after the War the site was taken over by the County Council Highways Department, and became the local depot for the highways maintenance team. There was a large open fronted shed that was used by the United Counties Bus Company to garage buses overnight, in readiness for an early start, taking workmen to the steelworks at Corby and to various other destinations.
Coach House & Stable
There was a substantial stone building that had the obvious signs of being a coach house and stable, with horse troughs and mangers and also an area at first floor that was probably to accommodate the coachman. I have always understood that at one time this belonged to the White Hart Hotel.
Walled Garden
Between this building and what is now the fire station is a walled garden that must have been the Hotel’s kitchen garden.
